It seems I may be a bit late to the party on this one, but the folks over at HP Development have developed a slick tech... basically a light sensative layer they can apply to the top of a CD or DVD... this is called LIGHTSCRIBE and is being applied to discs by several manufacturers (look for the logo on the right)...
